HEARTS aims at increasing Europe’s autonomy on critical radiation-testing facilities outside its borders, by creating a high-quality and sustainable very high-energy (VHE) ion irradiation capacity, accessible to and tailored for space applications. The project involves 5 academic, scientific and industrial partners.
Its activities include, among others, upgrading and tailoring of the current VHE ion accelerator facilities in Europe, as well as facilitating access to VHE ion beams for research and commercial applications.
For two weeks in November, 10 companies and institutions were provided access to CERN’s new high-energy heavy ion irradiation facility to test electronics for use in space, with positive initial feedback from the users
The EU-funded project HEARTS aims at providing access to high-energy heavy ion radiation testing facilities for space exploitation and space exploration.
