Welcome to Issue #43 of Accelerating News!
In the current climate and economic climate, the accelerator community is exploring ways to be more sustainable. This month, we focus on promising new technologies to reduce the energy consumption of accelerator facilities.
New multi-turn energy recovery devices are being developed at the Technical University of Darmstadt. Permanent magnets are showing outstanding performance as an alternative to electromagnetic magnets, but their dependence on rare earths requires good practices, as highlighted in the last I.FAST workshop at DESY. Finally, projects on additive manufacturing, high-temperature superconductors and many other technologies have been funded under the I.FAST Innovation Fund.
From future technologies to new facilities. The High-Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider received a new beam gas curtain to monitor the beam and new magnets to further control it. The Future Circular lepton Collider, meanwhile, showed promising results in the development of optics with combined function magnets.
The general public must be aware of the positive impact of accelerators. One study demonstrated the economic effects of Big Science projects by looking at the local impact of procuring superconducting RF cavities. With regard to young audiences, the Particle Therapy MasterClass has just opened registration for its 2023 edition for high school students. Finally, the CERN Accelerator School is celebrating its 40th anniversary and has announced new dates for its 2023 courses.
The editors invite you to browse the new issue and learn more about the latest developments in the particle accelerator community.
