Issue 34
October 2020
Welcome to issue #34 of Accelerating News!
The latest issue welcomes the new website with news from the third run of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and all the ongoing upgrades for the high-luminosity run; highlights two updates from the realm of future colliders; and novel acceleration technology. As the particle-accelerator community adapts to a new reality, workshops and conferences re-start, and Accelerating News returns to reporting on these events with news from FCC November Week, LINAC2020, and EASISchool3.
To mark the end of Long Shutdown 2, the DISMAC project (Diode Insulation and Superconducting MAgnets Consolidation) is ending. Meanwhile, the final focus quadrupole magnets around IP1 and IP5 regions will be replaced with Niobium–tin (Nb3Sn) magnets; and the design of diode stacks and their integration in the special cryostat is ongoing. Looking forward, phase 2 of the LHC upgrade project was launched in the UK, contributing to the High-Luminosity LHC with £ 26M.
For future colliders, the EuPRAXIA project has now moved into its preparation phase and submitted a proposal to the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI); while the CLIC collaboration offers a review of characterisation of stray magnetic fields and a mitigation technique. An exploration of the potential of the THz-driven acceleration brings this issue to a close.
With this new issue, the editorial team invites our readers to explore the new website and issue, featuring new sections like recommended readings and announcements; and a page to host all news published in the newsletter. Happy reading!
